Week 1 Advanced Social Media

In the first class of the semester one of things that had importance is that we reviewed what we were going to be doing in the class. We will be getting different types of online certifications throughout the class including badges from Codecademy and an online certification from HubSpot. Being certified in these will mean that we have developed an understanding of making a website and different ways of marketing.

Online Certifications

The class also voted on which certification we would like to be our third, Google Analytics or Content Marketing through HubSpot. The winner was Content Marketing through HubSpot. The class session overall was used to get a feel for what the students wanted to do and it accomplished that.

The badges for Codecademy Making a Website should be finished by February 16th and Hubspot should be finished in steps as it will be a longer process. The first step is due January 26th which includes the Intro, Fundamentals and Attracts. Codecademy Making a Website will take an approximate four hours. The first installment of HubSpot will take approximately a little over two and a half hours.

The first class has decided the direction of the class and I think that the students have established where it is going. This class will better the resumé of every student who takes advantage of the opportunities given to them in this class. The next couple weeks will show a lot as far as what will be covered and done in class, and the fact that Ike is putting us into groups for our projects could be a great advantage. Ike knows all of us and who would work best together, but it also gives us all more of a real world experience as we will not be able to pick our coworkers in the future.

Questions:

What certification do you think will help you get a job most? Why?

How do you plan on using the knowledge you gain from these certifications in the future?

What are you looking forward to learning in this class? Why?

What snacks should Ike bring next week?

I think the most helpful tool we learn will be the html codes, I have been looking forward to learning to code since we talked about it last semester and cannot wait. I plan on learning as much as I can about html and building an app.

    Good first blog, friends!

I definitely agree that our first meeting was huge in setting the tone for the class. I was actually super nervous when I checked Pilot last week and saw that Ike hadn’t uploaded a syllabus yet, but I think it was incredibly productive for us to have the opportunity to hash that out in class. Ike’s really good at catering his material to fit the needs of the people in his classes, and allowing us to give our input about what kind of experience we were looking for will for sure give us a better understanding of the skills we personally are looking to improve upon.

Personally, I really wanted to focus on the analytics side of marketing this semester, and I thought the Google Adwords Challenge sounded so fun. I got the impression that a couple of people kind of felt the same way and were a little bit irritated, but I think it’s important that we address the needs of the majority of us, and we need to just remember that our interests and desired skill sets are all going to be different. Regardless, we can rest assured that all of the certifications we get this semester will look great on our resumes! Plus, the Google Analytics certification is free anyway, so I know what I’ll be doing with my spare time! :]

Also, I could definitely go for some Oreos. Just sayin’.

the main reason I decided on the Digital Hub 2.0 instead of the google analytics path is time. Ike even said we would have to rush a bit to get certified because the marketing challenge wouldn’t let you compere unless certified…

I really don’t want to rush this and I want to learn as efficiently as possible.

Also, google analytics is important, sure, but we all need to be able to use skills to market and build ourselves.

I completely agree about coming in a little nervous, but Ike knew what he was doing. The biggest issue with the ones we chose I think is that they all sounded so great and would all look amazing for a resume, but trying to accomplish everything in one semester is just unrealistic. Good comment Adrienne! And double stuffed Oreos would be pretty amazing.

I really do think that since we all have taken the first social media class with Ike, we all had a pretty good idea for what to expect from this class. It almost felt like a reunion with all the familiar faces in the room, except of course for one that usually stands next to Ike that was missing that night… :(
Nevertheless, the first class was definitely an exciting one, and there’s a lot of fun things to look forward to.

I personally think that the Content Marketing certification will be the most useful, because as we learned in the first class, reaching the right audience and communicating the right message online can be a difficult task. Plus, in the job world, marketing is huge. Just take a look here to see for yourself: http://www.triplepundit.com/podium/importance-digital-marketing/

Having had some background in a media company with the work I have done for Cox Media Group Ohio, I have seen first-hand the importance of digital marketing. Having knowledge in that area when applying for a job is a big deal from what I have heard from some higher-ups! I’m definitely looking forward to learning about this aspect so that I can build my personal resume a little more and make some career progress.

As far as snacks for next time… I have really had a strong craving for Cheez-Its this semester! :)

What certification do you think will help you get a job most? Why?
I truly believe the certifications with CodeAcademy and Hubspot will help us when it comes to getting a job because the marketing experience with both Hubspot and the Digital Hub 2.0 will help us grab some of that experience, which will essentially look awesome on our resumes.

How do you plan on using the knowledge you gain from these certifications in the future?
I want to promote myself as a photographer in the future, and I think these skills will best serve my individual needs.

What are you looking forward to learning in this class? Why?
I am looking forward to working with WordPress the most, due to both my blogs are run on WordPress and the website I work for is run using WordPress.

What snacks should Ike bring next week?

First things first, I’m definitely seconding the sentiments that this first class was huge in terms of setting the tone for the class. I was also pretty nervous when I saw that a syllabus hadn’t been uploaded yet, but I found it really helpful to be able to actually sit there and go through it piece by piece and decide what we thought would benefit us the most this semester. Based on what we’ve decided, I’m very excited to see how the rest of the semester plays out!

I think that the either the Content Marketing through Hubspot or CodeAcademy certifications will be some of the ones that end up most useful for me as they really hammer in on what a lot of jobs that I’ve found working in Social and Digital Media for a professional sports team or larger brand look for in candidates, and I feel as though the more well rounded I am, the better, especially looking to go into fields that are hugely competitive with only a limited amount of opportunities immediately available.

I plan on using these skills to make myself the most well rounded candidate for positions that I possibly can. Wanting to go into such a niche market can be risky sometimes, but I really feel as though what I can gain from this class and the experiences that I have will contribute to a resume and a breadth of skills that will help me to be successful long term and hopefully get me my ticket to the land of those who know what it feels like to be employed.

I’m looking forward to everything in this class! I know that might be the cliche and more typical answer, but after learning what I did in the beginning class last semester, I’m really excited to expand on what I’ve learned and really push myself to be the best that I can be within all these certifications and projects.

As for snacks, I’m pretty open as long as there’s no risk of anaphylactic shock this time. 😉

I’m excited to take this class to gain some impressive expertise to add to my resume. I’m looking forward to receiving my certification in CodeAcademy because I think it’s important to have the basic knowledge of using HTML coding when job searching. Everything we’re doing in the class I think will truly come in some type of help for me in the future.

I think the knowledge I will gain for this class will personally help me significantly since I’m attempting to start a company that was inspired by the job I have at NO BULL. Some of marketing tools in this class will help build on my experience for NO BULL, myself, and my company.

Snacks.. I mean I would be way down for literal baked potato chips or peanuts.

Scott, The experiences you told about in the first class were pretty exciting to hear about. After this class the experience you will get from it is exciting to see what opportunities will come from it. I would love to hear more about the company that you are wanting to start up.

This class is exciting and intimidating all at the same time. I am excited to learn all the great information that goes along with the certifications and programs of course like everyone is. The end goal would be to use these certifications to actually land a job after I graduate. Fingers crossed. Here’s to a hopefully stress-free semester. (:

The Content Marketing certificate would probably be the one that would help me land a job. When creating web content, your goal is for it to get out there a reach your target. That’s what HubSpot says we’ll be learning by taking the online courses. With this, I’ll be able to show employers that I can get their business and messages out there.

I’ve always wanted to learn HTML, so I’m going to use the information learned from Code Academy to dabble in building a website. I guess I’ll use the other certificate(s) as a way to get a job.

Out of the course content that we went over the first day in class, I’m most excited to learn HTML. I wanted to take some type of web design class in college, but I never got the chance to. My Myspace design skills sucked ten years ago, so this is my chance at redemption.

I think Ike should bring the off-the-wall chips that nobody buys at the store except for him that will burn your mouth and make you drink Diet Dr. Pepper, which you forgot intensifies the burning sensation. That sounds like a good option to me.

I believe Google Analytics along with Adwords will look better on a resume because of the star power that comes along with Google. I also believe that the career field is looking for more hires on the analytics side. Understanding the market is more important than content generation because you won’t know what to create if you don’t know where your audience is moving.

I plan to market myself to employers based off of these certifications. Not only will these certifications open doors, but it will help to further my understanding of this ever expanding field. To be honest I’m no sure how I will use these skills in a job because I don’t know what employers will ask of me. However, I’m eager to learn them and add it to my toolbox.

I’m looking forward to learning HTML! I think this will be a very unique skill and could be used to leverage employers for hire wages.

I hope Ike brings something with chocolate next week! Really craving it!

Cameron, I like that you addressed that you don’t know what you will asked on the job. It is such a true statement, but with these skills in your ‘toolbox’ you will be poised and ready to take what they throw at you.

I for one am looking forward mostly to the Google AdWords certificate as I feel that it will stand out a bit more from the others, offer more insight into my work with Google Analytics, and open more doors to different areas in the digital marketing world.

In my work with social media over the last few years I have been very interested in the backdoor analytics and book keeping of pots’ success or failure. This being said, I will use these certifications to help further my career in digital marketing, social media coordinating, and market analyzing. Also, coding is always pretty interesting to learn/get into. I feel that this class is very well structured to give students a wide range of different tools to pull from or even to learn where they want to go with their future work and interests.

And as for the snacks, I’d go for like a few buckets of chicken….perhaps a meat and cheese tray as well.

Andy, first off buckets of chicken isn’t quite a snack haha. But it’s great to hear how you plan on using this information for your future and that you’re so excited to get started in the learning process.
