Wright State and the Never-Ending Budget Problem

Wright State University topsee-turvee

Wright State’s budget problems could have the University’s future turned on its side.

When we began class for this week, it was time once again for an update for the Wright State University budget situation, and the story is… not so good. Wright State University may have just selected a new president, but it’s no secret that the university will be in hot water for some time when it comes to the budget. This week we saw yet again that overspending on the university’s part for the last several years will inevitably result in more cuts in faculty by the time Fall Semester 2017 rolls around. Quite a few of us in this class (myself included) will be graduated by that time, but for the underclassmen, it’s becoming abundantly clear that their experience may not be the same experience that we have had and that’s bad news. At this point, we can only hope that with a new president, and a growing amount of media attention being called to the university’s problems that things will slowly begin to get better from here.

The Next Steps for the Digital Hub 2.0

It may seem hard to believe, but April is nearly here, and we all know what that means… It’s almost time for the Digital Hub presentations!

Digital Hub 2.0

What’s also a little scary is that the requirements have changed once again! This week we learned that Facebook Pixel will not be part of the requirements for the project. Don’t remember hearing about Pixel? You can see a little more about it by checking this out! Also, instead of a LinkedIn page for our Digital Hub 2.0 businesses, we will be creating a Google + business page. Never done this before? Check this out to get a better idea!

Extra Credit?!?!

It may have come as a surprise at first, but we now have an extra credit opportunity! After getting a taste for a Google Adwords exam with the Fundamentals test this week, it seems that the class reached a mutual conclusion: Adwords is TOUGH! But fear not, the next Adwords exam we need to complete for class on April 6th is Mobile Advertising, which is reportedly an easier task and only has 70 questions. If your mind still isn’t at ease about Adwords, then take comfort in knowing that the exam rumored to be the hardest, Advanced Search Advertising, is now the extra credit option. I certainly feel more at ease knowing it’s not a requirement! Take a look here and you’ll see what I mean.

Questions:

1. What do you think will become of Wright State University with the current budget situation progressing the way it is?

2. How do you think the Digital Hub 2.0 compares to the original Digital Hub project? How is your project coming along?

3. At this point in the class, do you think you will attempt the extra credit opportunity? Why or why not?

4. Did you like any of the snack options from Jungle Jim’s? Are there any snacks in particular you would like to have again in class?

    1. What do you think will become of Wright State University with the current budget situation progressing the way it is?
Wright State will raise tuition, they will continue to fire professors leading to an increase in the student to teacher ratio.
    2. How do you think the Digital Hub 2.0 compares to the original Digital Hub project? How is your project coming along?
this project is way harder. i think we should have done the google project. we would be doing the same thing, however we would have been able to put the google project on our resumes.
    3. At this point in the class, do you think you will attempt the extra credit opportunity? Why or why not?
yes. those thirty points are very well needed at this point in the semester.

    4. Did you like any of the snack options from Jungle Jim’s? Are there any snacks in particular you would like to have again in class? i
i never heard of jungle jims. but i would like for ike to buy some latte flavored poptarts. both flavors.

Chris, latte flavored poptarts is something I could definitely go for too! I agree with you that the Digital Hub 2.0 is tough, but I also think that the Google project would have been much tougher because part of the critique of our project would come from someone outside the class. I thought that sounded way too scary! But, I suppose we’ll never really know now, and we’ll still have the Digital Hub 2.0 to add to our resumes!

    1. What do you think will become of Wright State University with the current budget situation progressing the way it is?

I’m going to abstain from answering this question right now because, given the fact I still have a year left, I want to naively believe that everything is going to be fine over the next year at least and that university isn’t going to spontaneously combust at any moment. However, I’m definitely not optimistic nor am I expecting the best.

    2. How do you think the Digital Hub 2.0 compares to the original Digital Hub project? How is your project coming along?

Suffice to say, I will never complain about the original Digital Hub project seeming daunting because this honestly feels like about a hundred times that. I’m stressed out and it’s not fun, but we’re making progress and I’m happy with how it’s going, so that’s a definite plus. Definitely wishing we had done the Google challenge instead right about now, though.

    3. At this point in the class, do you think you will attempt the extra credit opportunity? Why or why not?

Yes. Mostly because I’m still bitter that I missed out on 10 points for blog posts and I want some way to make up for that, but also because I like my nice and shiny 4.0 and the extra credit points will likely help ensure that I can keep that intact.

    4. Did you like any of the snack options from Jungle Jim’s? Are there any snacks in particular you would like to have again in class?

I actually did enjoy most of them! It’s hard to remember which ones were my favorites exactly, but there was definitely a good bunch there. In terms of any snacks I’d like to see again, I’m really okay with whatever. It’s just nice being able to have something to eat that I don’t have to pay ten dollars for (looking at you Wright State dining services).

Ten dollars for a meal… definitely not cool on a college student’s budget… Hahaha! But Serenity, with the Google Project, we would have people outside the class critiquing us. That’s what made me personally sway toward the Digital Hub 2.0, but I also agree with you that this makes the original Digital Hub look like a freshman project in terms of difficulty and time requirements! Poor Wright State though… honestly it makes me sad, but a 4.0?!?! Really?!? Whoa… I hope you take that with you to graduation!!

    Good post Jonah!

I believe that the University will have to enter the equivalent of bankruptcy for colleges. The major mistakes that have come from the previous administration have left Wright State with no other option than to cut and pray!

I think that one major comparison between this year’s project and the original Digital Hub project are the social media accounts. Although, this time around we have to create all new accounts for our businesses. The management of these accounts are similar. but now we have to actually follow through with content. Our project is finally starting to take shape, but there have been a few hurdles to overcome. looking forward to the finished product.

I will definitely be taking on the extra credit opportunity. I believe Ike said we could do Google Analytics as well for extra credit. our group will be working on the certification together if anyone is interested.

I didn’t mind the cookies from Belgium! That’s about it though. The rest was pretty disgusting, especially the chili suckers! I want FRIED CHICKEN!

Thank you very much, Cameron! I definitely agree with you on the fried chicken… Ike if you’re reading this right now: Pretty PLEASE!! Also, this cut and pray method you mentioned is what Wright State has been doing for a while and I agree, it’s not working. I’m glad to hear your project is coming along well!! Here’s to a shiny fresh round of brand new Digital Hub 2.0 projects and Google Adwords certifications for everybody!

    Well written, Bud!

    1. What do you think will become of Wright State University with the current budget situation progressing the way it is?

Ugh I’m just so glad I won’t be here next year. I think Wright State will ultimately be fine, but it’s going to take a long time and a lot of cuts to get the University back in the green. I feel really bad for those who aren’t graduating since they’ll have to deal with the effects of this mess.

    2. How do you think the Digital Hub 2.0 compares to the original Digital Hub project? How is your project coming along?

I think that with the knowledge we’ve gained over the last two social media classes, this project is much more straightforward than I thought it was going to be. That said, though, it’s definitely a lot more work than the original digital hub project. I’m still wishing we would have done the Google project, but I’m excited to see what we all come up with for this, nonetheless.

    3. At this point in the class, do you think you will attempt the extra credit opportunity? Why or why not?

I didn’t think Ike had completely settled on which certification we’d do. I thought he was going to let us know after he was able to look at all of the point values. Did I miss something? Regardless, i’ma do it. I wanted to work on more certifications anyway. Might as well get points for them.

    4. Did you like any of the snack options from Jungle Jim’s? Are there any snacks in particular you would like to have again in class?

They all smelled like cabinets so, ya know. But there were a couple that weren’t bad.

BUT OH MY GOSH I SAW STARBURST JELLYBEANS IN THE STORE THE OTHER DAY AND I WANT THEM.

Also, since Ike likes to make us eat weird things, he should make us play bean boozled in class for Easter. I think he’d get a kick out of it, hahahah.

Thank you Adrienne!! But be careful with who you tempt with bean-boozled… trust me, it could lead to terrifying results! It’s hard to believe that we have come so far and graduation is only weeks away for so many of us in class… oh, how the time flies. I agree with you that this project is a lot harder than the original Digital Hub. Just imagine how hard it would seem to us if we didn’t have the experience of doing the original Digital Hub first?! As for the extra credit: BRING IT ON!!

    1. What do you think will become of Wright State University with the current budget situation progressing the way it is?
Honestly, I think much of it will dissolve and they will have to basically start all over again. They really screwed themselves, and the students.

    2. How do you think the Digital Hub 2.0 compares to the original Digital Hub project? How is your project coming along?
I think the Digital Hub 1.0 was more fun than the 2.0 version. I think it is cool we are learning about all the ways to set up a page, get a logo, and more. I am even user fiverr for myself, buying a watermark for my photography soon!

    3. At this point in the class, do you think you will attempt the extra credit opportunity? Why or why not?
I might, depending on how I am doing in my other classes and if I am ahead in my online class. What can it hurt?

    4. Did you like any of the snack options from Jungle Jim’s? Are there any snacks in particular you would like to have again in class?
I would like veggies, honestly. haha!

I think veggies would be cool! Well, to keep them fresh, they kind of have to be… okay, that’s enough! But I was impressed with fiver too. The logos we managed to get are actually pretty awesome!! As far as Wright State is concerned, it’s not looking good for us at all… here’s to graduation before the problem gets worse!

    1. I think Wright State will get it together eventually, compared to a lot of universities Wright state is still rather young, just young and dumb they’ll gain experience and get a hold of things soon in my opinion but if not and things worsen I just hope the university closing means that I won’t have to pay my student loan debt.
2.I think this project is a lot harder then the first and that is why we have partners because there is so much that we have to get done this time around, but I think doing the first digital hub projects gets you a good start on how to go about things on the digital hub 2.0 so it works out.
3.I’m still not sure if I want to do the extra credit or not, not because I don’t want the points but the first exam gave me a headache so I don’t really want to take another one along with the mobile we already have to do.
    4. Didn’t try the jungle jim snacks I would never do that to my body, seems inhuman but the cheez its were good , I did want to try the cookies but am unable to right now so that was weak but I liked the Tim bits but dont want him to bring them back cause I’ll be tempted to sin

No shame here, Paul, Tim-Bits are hard for just about anybody to stay away from when they’re being offered! I like what you said about Wright State as an institution! I have never heard anybody describe it before, and you make a good point! As for the extra credit: DO IT! DO IT! Think of it as the final headache before we all finish up! I also couldn’t agree more with you about the Digital Hub. I’m excited not only to see how it turns out for my group, but to see what everybody else comes up with as well!

    1. What do you think will become of Wright State University with the current budget situation progressing the way it is?
I dont think it looks good, but only time will tell and I guess we will have to see what comes of the new president.

    2. How do you think the Digital Hub 2.0 compares to the original Digital Hub project? How is your project coming along?
I think that the digital hub was a good thing to go through before attacking the digital hub 2.0, I think it prepared us well. Our group is going great so far and I’m excited to start diving deeper into things.

    3. At this point in the class, do you think you will attempt the extra credit opportunity? Why or why not?
Im still on the fence. Honestly, it wont hurt me, but I’ll just have to set aside time to do it.

    4. Did you like any of the snack options from Jungle Jim’s? Are there any snacks in particular you would like to have again in class?
The jungle jims snacks were not cool…but I feel weird requesting food so I’ll just take what comes.

With you being my group leader, I’m definitely glad to hear you say that the Digital Hub 2.0 is going well! I’m excited to see what else we’re going to put together for this project! But why weren’t the Jungle Jim’s snacks cool? Did you try the pie crust cookies?! I’m telling you, the similarities in the taste of that cookie and the taste of pie crust were uncanny! Then again, they didn’t come from a can so…. okay, I’ll stop!

I want to start this off by saying great post, I am so proud of you right now. Honestly if we don’t get our stuff together soon, there might not be a Wright State in the next few years. Our budget problem should of been tackled years ago and not addressed only when we ran out of reserve funds. Side note, the administration will not even address the real reason for this crisis, only admitting that we had a problem with overspending by accident.

It is a lot more work I can tell you that. It’s not that bad so far, just a little time consuming. The project is coming along well and hopefully we can tackle the big parts next week.

I think that I will. At this point I just want to graduate and any extra points help. If this extra credit assignment takes me one step closer to graduating then I am going to do it.

I thought they were not that bad. Those Nutella cookies, 10 out of 10. Mixed berry poptarts don’t sound half bad right now.

Mixed berry poptarts…. yes please! Hahaha! Also, thank you very much, Hasan! I’m in the exact same boat as you: let’s get this Bachelor’s degree done while Wright State is still a thing! I will definitely be attempting that extra credit as well!

I think it’s hard to tell what will become of the school. If things don’t get better, I can’t imagine what else they’ll cut. Cutting a bunch of professors will eliminate certain classes, or just add more classes per professor. I don’t think either is good. Maybe if the school eliminates the true issues which are the people who have been making financial decisions this whole time, then maybe the school can rebuild. As of now, the school’s just taking L after L. You would think it was Nicki Minaj when Remy Ma ended ha.

I honestly like 2.0 better than 1.0. The concept of 2.0 is fun. I like the idea of creating a company, its social media accounts, and its website. Being creative is fun to me. I don’t think it would’ve been too much to do solo and I wish we could’ve done it that way so we can all express our ideas freely. Not saying that we can’t already, y’all.

I think I’ll try the extra credit since it’ll help your grade if you do well and won’t if you do poorly. You can only win. Winning! TIGER BLOOD.

I didn’t try any of the Jungle Jim’s snacks. I imagine Ike slowly rubbing his hands together as he walks down the food isles titled “Trash” and picks out the snacks that say “bound to make someone sick.” It’s his master plan and I see right through it. Y’all think he’s trying to get us with Digital Hub 2.0? No, children. He’s trying to get us with the snacks. OPEN YOUR EYES. IT’S A CONSPIRACY.

I honestly was laughing out loud at this for a good minute and a half! But you definitely missed out on some good snacks when Jungle Jim’s was brought in! There were cookies that tasted exactly like pie crust!! I also agree with your point on the extra credit. Nowhere to go but up!!
